Sept 2026: Breathe In The Air
The best and the greatest is breath. - Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upaniṣad
Breathe, breathe in the air
Don't be afraid to care
Leave, but don't leave me
Look around, choose your own ground.
-Roger Waters
Brahman is Breath. Brahman is what is referred to as the Ultimate Reality. Breath is our connection to the veiled infinite. Breath is our best understanding of what we may call God, how we may know God, how we may reconcile our connection with God - how we know ourselves as God.
Our primary practice is breath. As yoga teachers, we are teachers of breath. Breath is the Truth. Breath is the revealer. Breath is the healer. Breath is simple. Breath is the teacher. Breath is the beginning. Breath is repeating. Breath is living. Breath is strengthening. Breath is the union. If we breathe together, our association of Truth is indelible.
Singing is breathing. Dancing is breathing. Breathing is asana. Breath is the wave, asana is the surfing. Any movement without breath is just paddling and pretending - swimming against the current. Catch the wave, the universe reveals itself.
Breath is the mind, and mind is made even when the breath is. So, breath is the solution to our suffering. Even mind is where all our creativity is. Even mind is spacious. A view for miles.
What a privilege to have my life’s work to call out breath, to invite you to breathe, to remind you to breathe. To feel your breath, hear your breath, experience the rise and fall of your breath. For decades I have been a student of breath. Returning to breath is the evolution. If I’m worried and fearful, I don’t know where my breath is. When I look for it, and find it, observe it, witness it, my worry dissolves. Breath brings me to my ancestors.
I watched my stepmother take some of her last breaths. Watching your breath and my own in asana practice and meditation brought the gift of keen presence to hers. If you want to know and connect with someone or some being on a heart level - breathe with them, like them. Their breath will reveal the secret of their Soul.
Breath is the universal movement of One-ness.
“It is no accident that the Latin word spiritus and anima signify both “breath” and “spirit.” The same is true of the Greek term pneuma and the Sanskrit atman. For the breath is the royal road to the Spirit. Breath control is the fourth limb of Patanjali’s eightfold path and is followed by sensory inhibition, concentration, meditation, and ecstasy. From the state of ecstatic unification it is but a small leap into freedom”.
